About Us

Started in 1929 by Ernest and his son, E. Sam Hemming, Eastern Shore Nurseries Inc. has been growing plants continuously for our area’s finest gardens and landscapes. Started as a wholesale English Boxwood growing operation, the Depression changed that.  For survival, the nursery became a landscape nursery operation and remained so until 1992. In the ‘70s, Mike, grandson of Ernest, started more container and less field production. By 1980, field production had ceased. Then, in 1992, landscape operations were stopped and the nursery became a container growing wholesale and retail operation. In 1993, Larry Hemming, the fourth generation, joined the firm. Currently Larry’s son Robert, the fifth generation, joined the crew in 2013.

Today we are the last retail growing nursery in Talbot County, still growing all the old favorites and those new and exciting plants that do well here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Available is a full range of Encore Azaleas, Crape Myrtles, Boxwood, Forsythia, English, American, Japanese and Hybrid Hollies, Endless Summer Hydrangea, Blushing Bride Hydrangea, Knock Out Roses, Nandina, Kaleidoscope Abelia, Lilacs, many perennials and too many other varieties to list. We can help you select the proper trees and shrubs for shoreline and wetlands mitigation projects in a law abiding and economical way.
